Tensioning System

Tensioning of the deer fence is desirable only to a 'snug' hand tight situation. Although the materials are very strong, high tension could result in failure when the materials are subjected to sudden pressure. The use of mechanical devices to tighten the fence and/or tension cable could cause failure. All materials should have some movement, absolutely tight will weaken the system.

A firm tension cable will hold snow load yet deflect branch fall without snapping. The cable will still provide the stability to deflect deer should they run into the fence. The use of 'flagging' helps to educate the deer to the presence of the fence. Placed 3' -  4' from the ground (eye level) the flagging lets the deer know something is new.

A 2nd run of cable 3-4`off the ground (impact zone) further enhances the fence line in particular where heavy traffic is anticipated. White Tail deer being larger than our Black Tail may need this added support.

In all cases the use of stakes, rocks, logs whatever to hold the fence tight to the ground is essential. The deer will search out weaknesses in the fence line. The bottom of the fence is a logical choice for them. It cannot be over emphasized the importance of the bottom of the fence!
